Spain round off World Cup qualifying with victory

Julen Lopetegui's men ran out 1-0 winners in Israel to conclude their road to Russia 2018 on a high.

With their ticket to Russia 2018 already in the bag, the Spanish national team headed to Israel with their sights set on a win to put the seal on another successful qualifying campaign.

In the first half, the encounter was played on Israel's terms, with Spain unable to take command and some chaotic, end-to-end football ensuing. La Roja – who fielded an experimental 4-2-3-1 line-up – tried to build slowly through their two deep-lying anchormen, but struggled to get their three attacking midfielders on the ball. Clear-cut chances were few and far between, notwithstanding attempts from Sergio Ramos and the hosts' Almog Cohen, until Pedro found himself clean through on the stroke of half-time, only to be denied by Israeli keeper Ariel Harush.

Lopetegui's side managed to exert a tighter grip on proceedings after the interval, while Elisha Levy's charges increasingly sat back and bided their time, hoping to hit the visitors on the break. The introduction of Isco with 25 minutes to go injected some fresh impetus into the 2010 World Cup winners and they got their reward when Asier Illarramendi smashed home a screamer from the edge of the box that flew virtually into the top corner. It was a strike worthy of winning any game and one which ensured that the Spaniards ended their road to Russia on a positive note.
