LaLiga registers record stadium attendances

More than 14 million fans attended the LaLiga Santander and LaLiga 1|2|3 stadiums during the 2017/18 season – almost 223,000 more than in the previous season.

The LaLiga Santander and LaLiga 1|2|3 stadiums registered a total of 14,273,818 fans last term, a record figure which underscores a historic Spanish football campaign in terms of attendance. The figure represents an increase of almost 2% on the 2016/17 season and an increase of over one million spectators compared to the attendance figure recorded five seasons ago, which was 13,116,414.

The figures for LaLiga Santander suffered a downturn of 3.3% in the 2017/18 season compared to the previous season. A total of 10,173,142 spectators attended the LaLiga Santander stadiums, around 318,000 fewer than in the 2016/17 season.

The match between FC Barcelona and UD Las Palmas which was played behind closed doors on Matchday 7 significantly contributed to this reduction in attendance.

Likewise, reduced attendances at some large-capacity stadiums such as the Santiago Bernabeu, which recorded 183,018 fewer spectators, and the Camp Nou, which recorded 261,072 fewer spectators than in the 2016/17 season, also affected the LaLiga Santander attendance figures.

LaLiga 1|2|3, meanwhile, achieved historic figures for the 2017/18 season. Almost 4 million spectators (3,984,604) attended the stadiums to cheer on their teams, representing a 14.90% increase in attendance compared to the 2016/17 season. The excitement of the final LaLiga 1|2|3 matchdays helped to ensure that this unprecedented figure was obtained.

LaLiga continues to grow as an entertainment industry and the spectators' interest in watching the spectacle of Spanish football is driving the upward trend in the number of fans who attend the stadiums season after season.
